What Will Facebook’s M Do for Search?

[lbmn_commentscount]

If you haven’t seen it yet, Facebook just launched M, a virtual assistant similar to Apple’s Siri and MS Cortana.  I can see this playing a big role in ecommerce.  Huge actually.  If you go back and look at the explosion video has been for Facebook it should be no surprise what M may be able to do.

Views of videos on Facebook can be 7 or 8 times the amount  that are on Youtube through social sharing.  Does it make Youtube videos irrelevant? Of course not.  But when you think about all the data Facebook has from your social media profile it shouldn’t take long to realize some of the benefits, though they could be scary:

  1. Birthdays – M could provide  you notifications and birthday purchases.  For example, perhaps M will direct you to the nearest ecommerce store to make a fast, painless purchase.  Perhaps they’ll partner up to make it completely seamless behind the scenes.  Fewer steps and headaches equals customers.
  2. Food – M could partner with local restaurants to provide take out.
  3. Travel destinations – Think about your ‘Likes’, your ‘Posts’ about that perfect weekend getaway, that vacation for kids to Disney you’ve been looking at on travel agents Facebook Pages.  Facebook M may be your next travel assistant that will suggest the best airfare or hotel.  They’ll know this from all of your social sharing you’ve been doing.

If you really sit back and think about it how much data they’ve collected on you, Facebook M could be a serious force to reckon with.  It could also be scary.
